Many language teaching schools and colleges throughout the English-speaking world are recognised by accrediting organisations.
These schemes help students wanting to attend an English language teaching school to know whether its courses have an official guarantee of quality.
Most English speaking countries run national accreditation schemes for their language schools. Some schemes are run directly by governments and others by government agencies. There are also non-governmental associations of schools that offer guarantees of quality for their members’ courses.
A large and possibly confusing number of accreditation schemes exist. Many of them overlap each other. All of them apply different tests of quality assurance.
The British Council regularly inspects organisations in Britain offering courses in English as a foreign language. If they meet high standards of quality they are "accredited by the British Council".
There are over 370 schools, colleges and universities throughout Britain accredited by the British Council. They offer a range of courses in English at all levels and for all ages. They can all arrange accommodation and many organise a social programme for students.
The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation is an American organisation which aims to:
Advance standards and promote excellence in English language instruction and in the administration of English language programs and institutions.
Provide an objective means to review the quality of programs and institutions using validated standards of the profession through voluntary peer review.
Use trained and experienced professionals to take part in identifying the strengths and areas of improvement of English language programs and institutions seeking accreditation. Publicly recognise programs and institutions that meet the standards. Assure the quality of English language programs and institutions for students and the public.

British Council

The British Council regularly inspects organisations in the UK offering courses in English as a foreign language. If they meet agreed high standards of quality, they receive "British Council accreditation". Our inspectors monitor standards in teaching, teachers" qualifications, accommodation, supervision of juniors, premises and ensure that publicity material accurately reflect what is provided.

The English in Britain Accreditation Scheme protects the welfare of overseas students at accredited organisations in the UK. The Accreditation marque ensures standards of service and provides access to a complaints procedure.

ABLS (Association of British Language Schools)

Founded in 1993, ABLS is a self-governing body with the specific aim of promoting quality, professionalism and expertise in the field of English Language tuition and associated services.

The Association of British Language Schools (ABLS) represents a wide variety of different English Language providers throughout Britain. It includes large schools, small schools and home stay organisations, all providing a very personal service.

To become an approved member of ABLS a school must undergo a thorough inspection process. All members are then subject to an annual inspection which covers teaching standards, school facilities, student welfare and accommodation.

The ABLS Grievance Committee will act as an arbitrator in any disagreement that cannot be resolved directly with the school concerned.

ABLS is a national association whose members offer a diverse selection of year-round and summer courses suitable for all ages and abilities.
