The International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) is located on the Husson campus in the State of Maine in the scenic northeastern region of the United States known as New England.
Husson College was founded in 1898 and is the state's largest private post-secondary institution. Husson is fully accredited and offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, as well as intensive English programs at ICLS. The Husson campus is a pleasant walk from stores at a nearby shopping center. A larger shopping mall, movie theaters, restaurants, and cultural attractions may be reached in a few minutes by bus or car.
The Location
Bangor is a small, safe, and friendly New England city (population 35,000). The area is famous for its natural beauty and many international visitors come to enjoy its well-known tourist attractions. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are located one hour by car from Husson and Boston, Quebec, and the Canadian Maritime Provinces are a few hours driving time from Bangor. In a recent study Bangor, Maine was selected the "best small metropolitan area in the U.S." Bangor's most famous resident is the author, Stephen King.
The Course Offerings
When you arrive at ICLS you will take a placement test to determine your level of English. ICLS classes are small. You will find that your teachers know how to help you to understand and speak English very quickly. You will use English from your very first day. Classes meet from 9 AM to 12 noon and from 1 PM to 3 PM from Monday to Friday. During the 100 hours of class at each level, you will learn all the important areas of English: speaking and pronunciation skills, grammar, writing skills, reading, and listening comprehension. Language laboratory practice is a regular part of the program. When you are in the High Intermediate and Advanced levels of the program, you may study Standard English or you may choose specialized courses to complement the core curriculum. These specialized courses include classes for Academic/ Professional Purposes or for Business/Technical Purposes. Upon completion of the Advanced levels of the ICLS program, students are awarded a Certificate. Husson College undergraduate and graduate programs accept the ICLS Certificate as proof of English competency and no TOEFL is required.
Accommodation
Student residences are located on the Husson campus. Each ICLS student shares a room with one other student. Each room is equipped with connection for telephone, voice mail, and cable television. Free Internet connection in each room. Kitchens (for preparing snacks) and study areas are located in each residence building, TV lounge for student use, Laundry facilities are located on the Husson campus, a room is reserved for you when you register for the ICLS program.
Activities
The office of Student Affairs is charged with providing a variety of activities and services which enhance and extend a student's educational experience at Husson College. Housing and dining, athletics and recreation, health and wellness, student activities, counseling, safety and security, discipline, substance abuse, and student government are areas which frequently affect students lives and are the major functions and concerns of the Office for Student Affairs. This office exists to meet the needs and interests of students and subsequently relies upon the input and participation of every student to fill those needs successfully. Students are encouraged to visit the Office for Student Affairs and share with a staff member any ideas and concerns they have.
