The Location
Melbourne is the most important economical, cultural and political centre and capital of the state of Victoria. The population consists of a great variety of national origins, including italian, greek, chinese, vietnamese, british and irish immigrants. The skyline of Melbourne is dominated by numerous office-skyscrapers. Interesting sights are the State Parliament House, the Royal Exhibition Buildings, the stock exchange, Saint Patrick\'s Cathedral and of course the museum of Melbourne, which is the biggest museum of the southern hemisphere.
The Course Offerings
The teachers at GEOS Melbourne College of English are dedicated to helping students reach their full English language potential. Students have access to teachers not only during class but also after class for private consultations.
All teachers at GEOS Melbourne College of English are chosen for their experience teaching international students and for their high level qualifications. Many of the teachers hold post-graduate qualifications and in some cases have degrees at Masters level.
All our courses focus on learning English in authentic language settings. This means you will learn the language you need and want to use in practical situations.
At Melbourne College of English, it is easy to make real progress. Each day is divided up into different classes and includes activities such as roleplays, vocabulary building tasks, communication games and listening comprehension.
For those students who want to go on to further studies, the Intensive English course gives students practice in exam techniques, writing essays and making presentations. A number of GEOS students have gone on to high profile tertiary institutions in Victoria.
Accommodation
Homestay
The benefit of homestay is through cultural exchange and the need to constantly practise English with native speakers. Students learn about Australian culture by immersing themselves in it, experience new food, activities, and attitudes, but they are also encouraged to practise English.
Homestay fees are $185 per week for 2003 and this includes accommodation and food. Breakfast and dinner are supplied on weekdays, with three meals per day on weekends.
Shared Accommodation
This is a situation where students stay in a house with other people. In most situations housemates become friends and is a valuable learning experience for all.
This situation is difficult to organise in advance because it requires the student to meet the other people in the house before they make their decision. The price students pay per week is dependent upon the area and quality of housing, however the general price range is between $80-$200 per week.
Students normally move to this style of accommodation only after living in Melbourne for a few months. This tends to be easier after meeting other people from the college and outside.
