Powell River´s history is based upon forestry and abundant natural resources. Its early history is one of logging and mining camps first established in the 1890s. While the economic base of the community still rests on the forest industry, Powell River is successfully, and rapidly, diversifying into other areas such as mariculture (shellfish, seafood) and services. This community represents an interesting blend of old and new and provides its residents with an exceptional level of public services including educational and cultural facilities and excellent recreational opportunities.
