MODUS - The Language Institute

Modus Language Institute is a teacher-owned school which is dedicated to excellence in English education. We offer a variety of courses for adult students (18+). The name Modus comes from the Latin language - it means “the way” -we teach the way to develop strong knowledge and skills in a new language. We are committed to developing fluency and accuracy, confidence, and cultural awareness. Morning programs include a choice of "Academic English" "English Communication" & "Business English". In the afternoon, students can take a variety of Options - vocabulary, grammar, writing, presentation skills, listening, Canadian Culture, etc. This allows students to focus on the skills and interests that are important to them. We have experienced, university-trained instructors and dedicated staff who can help you get the most out of your time here. These teachers will help you gain the confidence you need, and provide useful study advice and support. Modus Language Institute is located in the center of Vancouver, the largest city on Canada's west coast. Many students enjoy a short walk to school from their city-center apartment. Vancouver has grown from a small town to a dynamic city on the Pacific Rim with strong international ties in only one hundred years. It is one of the world's most beautiful cities, surrounded by sea and mountains. Vancouver is clean and safe - a great place to enjoy both the nature and city life. Direct buses serving Vancouver International Airport arrive and depart from the Wall Center just one block on Burrard Street from the school. Vancouver isn't as cold as many people think. Vancouver has four distinct seasons. Spring arrives in March as the flowers start to bloom. The summer months (June, July, August & September) are sunny and usually dry. Vancouver has long summer evenings to enjoy before the sun sets (after 9:00 p.m.). By the time November arrives we have entered the "rainy season". The rainiest months are from November to March. January and February can be drier and snow usually falls only a few times a year, but you can find lots of it on the mountains. Ski season begins in November and lasts until March or April. Vancouveris a city made for people who enjoy living and we are at the heart of it. Live theatre, jazz, blues, folk, comedy, ...whatever you're looking for, you can find it in Vancouver. As well, Vancouver hosts an exciting variety of festivals.

The AM Program offers 3 different programs so that students can experience intensive study with a special focus. Academic English has a balance of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar practice. The Communication Program puts particular emphasis on fluency and listening and speaking skills. International Business English focuses on the language and cross-cultural skills for the modern business world. Program objectives include developing communication skills, pronunciation, listening and vocabulary-building. Grammar is also an important aspect of language and all Modus instructors emphasize correction of language, structure and style. One of the strong points of our flexible programs is the PM options - that offer students a wide variety of courses, at various levels. Our AM programs and Options are well-regarded for their emphasis on "real" English, not textbook English. Students at Modus develop strong skills using authentic materials.

HOMESTAY Homestay is widely recognized as the best way to improve your English. If you are interested in learning about Canadian life and culture, then homestay is the choice for you. Homestay is affordable and offers a rewarding experience. Lasting friendships are frequently formed. Families have been chosen for their commitment to the international student experience.You will be comfortable and safe. All families are located between 20 and 40 minutes from the school, close to public transportation. YOUTH HOSTEL For short-term students, hostels offer affordability and welcome students from all over the world.There is a hostel five minutes from the school. SHARED APARTMENTS Many long-term, independent-minded students choose to share apartments with fellow students. Modus will assist students with this option after they arrive in Vancouver. HOTELS All hotels are in the downtown core and are located within a 5 to 10 minute walk from Modus.Vancouver offers the widest choice of hotels.

Modus offers a wide variety of activities after school and on the weekend to introduce students to the city and culture around them. There is something for those who like sports, those who like cultural events or music, or those who like to sample the wide variety of Vancouver foods.
