Vejer de la Frontera is a small, perfectly conserved, historic town surrounded by beautiful countryside. It has been granted the status of Area of Historic and Artistic Interest and has also won the Beautiful Towns of Spain award. But Vejer is not just history. The steep, zigzagging streets, the whitewashed houses and the balconies filled with flowers also hide internet cafés, hotels, pensions, shops, restaurants, galleries and sidewalk cafés. The school building dates from the middle of the nineteenth century and is constructed on top of the ancient Moorish town walls. Large sections of these walls, which were built in the eleventh century, have been conserved, including the watch tower which overlooks our garden. The school has two Andalusian interior patios, a garden with orange trees, jasmine and bougainvillea, a terrace facing south across rolling countryside and an enormous azotea or roof, with views in all directions, from Medina Sidonia in the north to Morocco in the south. All these areas are available for the use of students. All the courses and programmes organised at Colegio de Español La Janda are supplemented by extra-curricular activities: films, talks, visits to places of local interest, horse riding, cookery classes and sports. Each weekend there is an excursion of one or two days to places further afield – to Sevilla, Córdoba, Morocco, Cádiz, Ronda.
