Geos English Academy BrightonBrighton, England The Language School
GEOS English Academy is part of an international network of schools spread across Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia. The school was first established in 1972 and became a GEOS school in 1989. It is accredited by the British Council and member of ARELS. The medium sized school made up of 4 Victorian houses has between 60 and 145 students from around 20 different countries, depending on the time of year. The permanent staff of around 20 people includes teachers and administrative staff. The teachers are all qualified and very experienced, many of the staff speaking other languages.
The Accommodation and Welfare Officer is on hand to deal with any host family or personal problems, the Director of Studies is always available to discuss academic issues, and the Exams Officer can give advice about further study in the UK. All other members of staff are equally happy to help students, whatever their questions or concerns may be.
The Location
Brighton and Hove is the most enchanting, exciting, extraordinary seaside city in Britain. However brazen that may sound, it is no exaggeration.
With its cosmopolitan air, oodles of restaurants, feverish nightlife and abundance of culture, the place defies comparison with anywhere else this side of the English Channel. For centuries it has been regarded as a ‘pleasure dome’, and that’s not about to change. If you love life, welcome to Brighton and Hove.
The Course Offerings
The methodology used by GEOS for all courses is primarily a communicative method´. The aim is to teach students the English that they will need for communicating, both inside and outside the school, as the main objective of most students is to improve their ability to speak and understand English. Still teaching all the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, GEOS tries and encourages as much practical communication as possible in order to maximise the amount of practice students get.
New elements of vocabulary and grammar are presented in a clear and lively way and with particular attention to pronunciation and intonation. The well-stocked materials room is used by the teachers to supplement the course book that students use in class. There are audio tapes, video tapes, class reading sets, communicative games, flashcards and many other resources that contribute to the success of the teaching. Students are often surprised at how much fun learning English can be at GEOS.
Accommodation
Homestay is recommended as the best way to experience British lifestyle and culture and to practise your English. The school is situated in a residential area with over 500 host families providing good quality accommodation at an affordable price. The standards of homestay accommodation are very high. The families are kind and friendly and houses and flats are clean and warm and the majority of families are situated less than 15 minutes walk from the school.
Activities
GEOS has a Social Activities Coordinator who organises weekly sporting and social activities for the students. There is a lot of information in the student lounge about all trips and events happening locally and students are welcome to ask for any additional information they may require. For those who wish to see as much as possible during their stay, there are weekend excursions to various places in UK and Europe. Prices vary depending on the destination, but are generally between £20 and £40 for a day trip, and between £80 and £150 for a 2-3 day trip.
