UvA Talen

UvA Talen is a friendly language school and part of the University of Amsterdam. The school offers intensive as well as non-intensive courses. Private tuition is also possible. OUR TEACHERS All our teachers have a background in language and they have experience in adult education. Not only are they selected because of their knowledge and experience, but they are also screened on their ability to cater to the needs of the individual student. Both native speakers and non-native speakers are employed by UvA Talen; experience has proven that both are capable of providing the insight necessary for language instruction—albeit from different vantages. On the one hand, the advantages of a native speaker are obvious: he or she has a perfect command of all the subtleties of his/her own mother tongue. On the other hand, near-native speakers have the experience of mastering the target language as a second language; as a result, they recognise perfectly what the specific problems of learning that language are. OPEN ENROLMENT Learning a language amounts to communication—a point optimally covered by our group courses. All our classes follow a set schedule, ensuring a structured and systematic approach to language learning; the group dynamic adds extra impetus to this process. Regularly assigned homework prepares participants for practical communicative activities during the lessons, so that language learned becomes language to be used outside the classroom quickly. Our approach covers all aspects of learning a language, which means you can count on a challenging, intensive and practical course. All in all, reason enough to opt for one of our open enrolment courses! INTERNATIONAL STANDARD Our courses operate within the European Framework of Reference, the internationally recognized standard for language levels developed by the Council of Europe. Each course is paired with a level from this framework, which gives you a concrete indication of what you can expect to be capable of doing in the target language by the end of the course. This level will be stated on the certificate you receive at the end of the course.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and is one of the greatest small cities in the world. From its canals to world-famous museums and historical sights, Amsterdam is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe. Amsterdam is a city of tolerance and diversity. It has all the advantages of a big city: culture, history, entertaiment, international restaurants, good transport - but is relatively small, quiet, and largely thanks to its canals, has a little road traffic. In Amsterdam your destination is never far away. Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, but there is much more. Amsterdam has over fifty museums which attract millions of visitors each year.

Intensive 4-week Dutch courses have 10 hours or 12.5 hours per week, depending on level (a total of 40 or 50 hours per level). Lessons take place daily on Mondays through Fridays. Intensive 4-week English courses (40 hours in total). Lessons daily on Mondays through Fridays. The setup of one-to-one courses depend on your own personal language needs and requirements.

UvA Talen does not offer or organise any accommodation, meals, etc. These are all easily available in and around Amsterdam!
