DAY ONE Your first day at the centre is a time for settling into your chosen course, meeting new people and preparing to enjoy your first stay with us. On your first day at inlingua Cardiff, you will also take a multiple choice placement test. Your result will indicate to us your level of English and help us to assess your current knowledge in both vocabulary and grammar terms, enabling you to join the right class immediately and to progress with confidence. Your teacher will spend a lot of time checking that your first lesson is at the appropriate level and that you are comfortable in your surroundings. On Mondays, all new students have an Information Meeting which will include health and safety. You can use this meeting to learn about Cardiff, about excursions and tours, and about a wide range of social activities offered by the centre. You'll also be able to obtain information about the centre's structure and the people who work here. At inlingua Cardiff, we are dedicated to making studying enjoyable and effective. That’s why we teach our students not only about the English language but also about British and Welsh culture and history. In essence we look not only to educate but also to stimulate and inspire. inlingua Cardiff language school occupies a prime location in the academic heart of Cardiff, close to the University, other centres of learning and the National Museum of Wales, to name but a few places of interest. TEACHING AND LEARNING Our classes are intended to be enjoyable, interesting and yet demanding. There's an old saying in English, 'The more you put in, the more you get out', and at inlingua Cardiff we certainly encourage our students to 'put a lot in' and then we empower them to 'get a lot out', making rapid and effective language learning possible, and having a lot of fun along the way! inlingua Cardiff will always express the needs of its students and to this effect is a 'learning community' which harbours not only excellence in language provision but also a teaching and management style which is inclusive and always welcoming. The teachers follow a carefully structured syllabus that introduces grammar and vocabulary appropriate to your level of English. Your teacher will use a wide variety of materials and you will also be taught pronunciation as a specific module on your course. Your teacher will be available to assist you individually on a regular basis. We believe in a communicative and co-operative approach in order to create the right conditions in our classrooms for you to maximize your potential and to make the most of your course. METHOD The inlingua method takes a simple, yet subtle and highly effective approach to language training. Differing from traditional ways of language teaching, this incredibly effective method is aimed at developing in the individual the capability of using the target language as quickly and effectively as possible. The inlingua method emphasizes the communication skills necessary for practical social and business situations. The right atmosphere for adult learning: At inlingua, we believe that you can reach your highest potential of learning when you are motivated, interested and happy. Our team of professionals always strive to accommodate our clients, and always consider their individual needs and objectives when organizing a particular program. Training takes place in the target language: From the very first class, you are taught only in the target language. You are encouraged to actually think in the studied language rather than translate from the primary language. Time spent translating reduces the time available for practicing your new language and interferes with your efforts to think in the new language. Learning hands on: Emphasis is placed on not only understanding the language but also speaking it. For this reason, classes are structured so that you will speak at least 70% of the time, while assimilating all the grammatical structures and vocabulary you need to function in your new language. Placing an emphasis on 'Speaking', has proven to be the quickest route to fluency. Ask questions: You are invited to ask questions. This allows you to manipulate the structures of your new language, to experiment and to be creative. By example rather than explanation: Knowing how to drive a car does not require knowing how the engine works. Similarly, knowing how a language works is not the same as being able to speak it. We believe that using examples is the best way to communicate the rules of grammar. As students subconsciously "lose focus" when rules are introduced, our trainers limit theoretical explanations and grammatical analysis and concentrate on oral skills. OUR TEACHERS All inlingua language-training instructors have attended extensive training with the inlingua method and materials. All teachers are professional, University educated, native speakers of the language they are teaching. Our teachers are friendly, enthusiastic individuals who are ready to provide a fun new way to explore the language you have chosen to learn. The inlingua method gives students plenty of practice time, enabling the student to assimilate new structures, as well as the necessary vocabulary and yet more importantly perhaps, plenty of time and space in which to speak their new language from the very first lesson. Our students spend up to 70% of their time speaking in the 'target' language during the class, and from day one. inlingua teachers have an acute understanding of the difficulties faced by language students and are culturally sensitive to the needs of students with specific language backgrounds. With our careful screening process and established school concept we ensure that students will be afforded the best opportunity to develop both their new language and communication skills in an exceptional learning environment.
Inlingua international was founded in 1968 in Berne, Switzerland. Today, inlingua International is one of the largest associations of privately-owned language schools in the world, a global network comprising around 300 schools in more than 30 countries, and on all on five continents. All inlingua centres are united, not only in name, but also through their unified teaching standards (high quality provision in both teaching materials and method). All languages are taught using the unique inlingua method, using especially designed and uniform teaching materials, but at the same time, taking an individual approach to clientele. Central locations are always preferred and especially comfortable premises are a hall mark of inlingua schools. High standards of teaching are maintained throughout the network. This enables a student to start learning in an inlingua school in their country for example, and then to continue their progamme in any of the other inlingua schools in Europe, Asia or America, indeed almost anywhere in the world, if needs be. Our clients are people with a clear goal in view who require the maximum benefit from their study time. Our task is to help them achieve this goal as efficiently as possible and at their utmost convenience (with the maximum comfort). At inlingua language centre Cardiff we are dedicated to making studying enjoyable and effective. That’s why we teach our students not only about the English language but also about British and Welsh culture and history. In essence we look not only to educate but also to stimulate and inspire. Inlingua language centre Cardiff occupies a prime location in the academic heart of Cardiff, close to the University, other centres of learning and the National Museum of Wales, to name but a few places of special interest. We offer high quality General English courses taught by qualified native English speakers in small classes, at every level from beginner through to advanced as well as the Cambridge First Certificate, Advanced and Proficiency, I.E.L.T.S. and TOEFL preparation. All our courses focus on the core skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing and we employ a wide range of audio visuals resources. At inlingua language centre Cardiff, we believe that learning doesn’t only take place in the classroom. An original, varied and engaging social programme is an opportunity not only to learn but also to practice established skills acquired during your course of study. To this effect, we organize regular trips and excursions to sites of great cultural and historical significance. London is just a few hours away and the delightful locations of much smaller towns such as Tenby, Cowbridge, Laugharne, Brecon, Cheltenham and Bath are just a short trip away. Together with frequent informal “get-togethers” at the local coffee shop, at a Jazz club, a 'Jam' night, a trip to the theatre...an arts centre, even a walk along the beach or in the mountains all add to the richness of a language learning programme at the inlingua language centre. Wales has the highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches in Europe and the coastal walks and some of the mountain scenery is breathtaking. The Brecon beacon mountains, often snow covered in winter, the stunningly beautiful Gower peninsula are both within a short drive or train journey from Cardiff, while more spectacular areas such as Snowdonia, the Pembroke Coastal Park, and many other truly unspoilt areas are within a day's drive.
